PHOENIX -- State transportation officials are getting closer to choosing the best option to connect Phoenix and Tucson.

Laura Douglas with the Arizona Department of Transportation said the organization has narrowed the options to six passenger-rail routes and one express bus route.

"Some of them start in the East Valley and they follow different routes into Pinal County and into the Tucson area," she said. "Some start in downtown Phoenix and run directly along [Interstate 10]."

Douglas said ADOT is considering another option for people to get to Tucson because I-10, already congested, is expected to experience heavier traffic in the future.

ADOT is asking for public input online. Survey results will help whittle options to three by early 2013.
