A new poll shows that Democratic candidate Paul Penzone is closing in on current Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The poll of likely voters showed Arpaio with 46.8 percent of the vote and Penzone with 42.1 percent. A little under 8 percent said they were not thinking of voting for either candidate.

A similar poll conducted last month showed Arpaio with 44.5 percent of voters and Penzone with just 39 percent.

The poll sample of 494 likely voters consisted of Republicans (37.9 percent), Democrats (28.3 percent), Independent (30.2 percent) and Other (3.6 percent) voters, who were all asked to identify their affiliation.

The poll was conducted by SWITCHBOARD Communications, a Washington D.C.-based firm and has a +/-4.4 percent margin of error.

    Is the most important thing we can do. Maricopa County: This is your county. Take it back from the MCSO and get somebody in office who will represent YOU! DON"T drink the koolaid. this is a corrupt sheriff and if you really think about it you will know that. Sheriff Joe has got to go. Get rid of the bully with a badge and restore order to MCSO.

    I have never been a fan of polling. And this poll completely illustrates why. It has a gap between democrats (pro illegal immigrant rights) and Republicans (for the rule of law) of almost 10 percent, so is it a shock that a poll which includes 10% more of of group that is known to hold one political belief comes out as the leader? DUH!

    Penzoil doesn't stand a chance agains Joe. How many elections are going to go by where all you hear is Joe has to go blah blah blah ....Ain't happnin'. Jow will be Sheriff until his dying days because the good people of AZ and that's the majority of them want him as Sheriff.... Not this time Penzoil.

    becoming alarmingly aware of Arpaio's feet of clay. Even those who have supported him in the past don't like what they are learning about the Sheriff. Enough of them, while still holding fond feelings towards him, will decide that his time is past and give their vote Penzone.

    That would be like putting the fox in charge of the chicken coop. Well have so many of these illegal Mexicans here we,ll have to change the name of the state to Mexizona the "Illegal criminal state of invading trespassers"

    When Sheriff Joe refused a debate, he lost my vote. I was on the fence with all the money the County has spent fighting lawsuits and the 427 cases of sex crimes that his office did not investigate. I gave Sheriff Joe the benefit of the doubt, but refusing to stand up in front of the voters to defend his position on these concerns shows that he either doesn't care or can't defend them.
