Nobel winner to head up Valley Latina summit
PHOENIX -- Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Guatemalan human rights advocate Rigoberta Menchu is slated to be among the featured speakers at a Phoenix conference on Latina leadership.
Menchu is scheduled Thursday to join U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown for the Adelante Movement Phoenix forum. The series of forums bring Latina leaders from around the country to discuss government contracts, franchises, jobs, start-up capital and corporate diversity contracts.
Menchu received the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work for peace during Guatemala's civil war, particularly on behalf of indigenous people. She is a member of the Quiche ethnic group.
She ran unsuccessfully in Guatemala's 2007 presidential election.
