Phoenix police kill man armed with assault weapon
PHOENIX -- A Phoenix police spokesman says two officers have shot and killed a domestic violence suspect who pointed an assault weapon at his wife and then at an officer.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson says the two 16-year veterans went to a north Phoenix neighborhood just after 5 p.m. Saturday after a call about a man throwing things in his house.
The officers were walking up to the woman who called when 49-year-old Samuel William Barnes came out of the house with a rifle and pointed it at her. The officers yelled at him to drop the rifle, but he did not.
Both officers opened fire on Barnes. Thompson says Barnes then pointed the rifle at one of the officers, who again fired at him.
Barnes was pronounced dead at a hospital.
