PHOENIX -- At least one person has been seriously wounded Thursday morning after a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office SWAT team attempted to serve a warrant at a West Valley home.

No officers were injured during the drug-related operation.

A male believed to be in his late 50s shot at deputies at a home near 51st Avenue and Bell Road. Deputies returned fire. The unidentified man was taken to a hospital, where he is expected to survive.

"We're going to defend oursevles every time that we're out there," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said, adding it was fortunate that no officers were hurt.

A handful of departments were involved in the call, including Glendale Police.
