SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — Police in Sierra Vista say a man who pointed a gun at officers trying to arrest him after a foot chase has been shot and wounded.

Police spokesman Cpl. Scott Borgstadt says the shooting happened in the backyard of a home Saturday afternoon after police chasing the suspect confronted the man. One officer opened fire when the man pointed a handgun, hitting him in the hip.

The unidentified suspect was flown to a Tucson hospital but his condition wasn't released.

The foot chase began after a patrol officer recognized a man who had outstanding warrants and tried to contact him. Borgstadt says the man ran and witnesses told detectives he pulled out two handguns during the chase.

The officer who shot the suspect is on routine administrative leave.
