PHOENIX -- Metrocenter mall isn't what it used to be, but police said it's making a comeback.

"It hasn't always had the reputation that it probably has now," said Phoenix Police Commander Chuck Miller.

He recalls being a teenager and heading to the mall, near Interstate 17 and Dunlap Avenue, after football games and on weekends. "It was the place to be," said Miller.

Over the years, as larger anchor businesses closed their doors, smaller stores followed suit.

The area around Metrocenter has been plagued with crime and people feared gang activity. Slowly but predictably, shoppers headed elsewhere to spend their dollars.

"My message is, if you haven't been you need to go, because it's on the right track," Miller said.

He said violent crime in the area has dropped by over 25 percent since 2007, and car thefts have dropped by 80 percent.

it sounds more like a PR article written by a desperate mall ownership group! the mall died and the area around it did too because of the ..... well, nevermind. i get tired of saying it.

    The mall is turning around
Have you been there lately? There are not the crowds there once was, and it is too bad that J.C. Penney moved out, but the mall has a nicer feel to it than even a year ago. There are many new restaurants moving in around the mall, and it doesn't have the gang related feel it used to. Some of the stores there have better variety than Arrowhead probably because the rent is cheaper and the stores have more square footage to house product. I like shopping there.

    Great News, Metrocenter
Uh... so a Police Commander is lying? Doubtful! I shop here and I agree that Metrocenter looks good. Instead of complaining or writing off a property that someone is trying to help, why don't you support it and our City and our police? Other people are investing in the neighborhood. Try it!
