PHOENIX -- A 79-year-old man who disappeared while geocaching has been found dead in a ravine in New River.

The Arizona Republic reported that Chuck Mettille of Cave Creek was discovered Sunday after members of Arizona's geocaching community searched the dark desert with flashlights.

An autopsy would be conducted to determine a cause of death.

Cheri Garick, one of Mettille's daughters, said she was angry that police wouldn't launch a missing-persons search after she called.

Tommy Thompson, a Phoenix police spokesman, said officers take missing persons reports seriously and that they have to follow a criteria in such cases because they get 7,000 to 9,000 missing-persons reports a year.

Initially, Thompson said the family didn't know where to begin the search.

Once geocachers found Mettille's vehicle, officers worked with them.
