PHOENIX - The Arizona Supreme Court is putting a Democratic legislative candidate back on the primary election ballot for House seat from a Phoenix district.

The Arizona Capitol Times reports that the court overturned a trial judge's decision throwing Jean Cheuvront-McDermott off the ballot because of a law governing the use of candidate names on nominating papers and the ballot.

The candidate's legal name is Lois Jean McDermott, but she argued that she has long used a hyphenated last name of Cheuvront-McDermott. Her son is Ken Cheuvront, a former legislator running for re-election to the Senate.

The Supreme Court said using the hyphenated name on nominating papers didn't strictly follow the law but that it apparently didn't confuse voters. But it ordered that the ballot list her last name as McDermott.
