PCH clinic focuses on rise of childhood obesity

Childhood obesity continues to be a serious problem in the United States.
Children as young as 1 are being admitted into the Care Clinic at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Children with a body mass index of 95 percent or higher are eligible for the program.
“Unfortunately, we’re seeing way too many kids walk through that door and utilize this program,” said Kelsey Hoff with PCH.
Hoff said there is a wide range of health issues associated with childhood obesity.
“Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, muscle failure, their bones are not strong enough. The fat is, unfortunately, taking over their bodies,” she said.
Hoff said the hospital’s Kohl’s Kids Rock Stars program is perfect for the entire family.
“If you’re fit as a family, you’re healthy as family. Parents really influence a child’s behavior.”
On the clinic’s website, participants can set goals, track activities and learn healthy tips.
