Animal Troubles on Hobbit Set: Animal wranglers say 27 animals have died in the making of "The Hobbit" movie trilogy. An animal welfare group says the animals were "kept on a farm filled with bluffs, sinkholes and other 'death traps.' " Read the AP story.
Lincoln Review: The plot: President Abraham Lincoln urgently fights for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution to free the slaves before the end of the Civil War. Why you should see it: Steven Spielberg quite capably draws a picture of a president in of the defining moments of his presidency. It hangs on the shoulders of Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, who gives an Oscar-worthy performance, hunched over, as if you could see the weight of the fate of an entire race of people on his shoulders. Tommy Lee Jones does a fine turn as Thaddeus Stevens. His acerbic verbal sparring with other congressman makes C-SPAN seem boring by comparison. An honorable mention goes to James Spader as a roguish political operative trying to garner votes, on the sly, for the president. Sally Field stars as Mary Todd Lincoln, but her story seems superfluous and somewhat breaks the tempo as we get glimpses of her madness. Overall, I give it an A-.
