Little could lessen the fever-pitched excitement for "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," but heavy rain nevertheless dampened the film's lavish Cannes party.
When the Click Chick started in September 2006, I honestly didn't think it would last for a week. I thought, OK, my boss wants me to find what's trending on the web. At the time, what was trending was an interview from a woman claiming to be Osama Bin Laden's mistress. She said he was a big fan of Whitney Houston. My first thought was the CIA should work with Houston, have a private concert and invite Bin Laden, some of his closest friends in Al Qaeda and their laptops and then do what the CIA does. Ned Foster thought my idea was crazy and until I found a Washington Post column that suggested the same thing. And that, folks is how the Click Chick was born. Thank you for the time you spent reading the blog. Thanks for enjoying the Timewasters and Cute Animal Videos. Thanks for enduring my eternal love for anything Star Trek. But most of all, thanks for including the Click Chick as part of your morning commute. For that, I am eternally grateful. I may not be here Monday through Friday, but I'll still be here on KTAR-FM hosting Arizona's Morning News Saturday from 6 to 8 a.m. along with Bob McClay.
Cute Animal Video: A cute little elephant gets stuck in a bathtub. What more could you want in a YouTube video?
Merry Funny Christmas: Someone in the newsroom sent me this link a few years ago. I post it every year because it always has everyone cracking up. I mean, how off do you see the Jolly Old Elf pulled over by the police?
Looking at the trailer for Michael Bay's Pain and Gain I think it's safe to assume that this is a movie about muscles and kidnapping. You can see Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie (quite the physical specimens) pumping iron and try to execute a plot to kidnap a career criminal's girlfriend to earn some easy cash. Why do they need the cash? So they can pay their rent on time of course!
After Argo, what is Ben Affleck getting up to? He'll be in Terrence Malick's To The Wonder:
Christmas Classic: Every year, I like to post this video at holiday time and this year is no exception. It's one of the most successful Christmas duets of time, David Bowie singing "The Little Drummer Boy" with Bing Crosby on Crosby's 1977 Christmas special. Funny how Bowie didn't want do it at first. Well, I'm glad he did.
What was the most watched movie trailer of 2012? The Dark Knight Rises, reports Deadline. Skyfall was #2 and Ted was #3. On the overall list of top Entertainment trailers, TDKR it was number #3. The number #1 and #2 trailers from any kind of entertainment were both Call of Duty Black Ops 2 trailers.
Cute Animal Video: If there's one thing I love, it's orangutan. It's baby Elmo when he was four days old:
X-Men's Bryan Singer is looking to reboot the classic CBS sci-fi television series The Twilight Zone, says THR. There have been two attempts since the original series ran from 1959 to 1964.
This is the year where a South Korean pop artist to the world by storm doing a horse dance in his "Gangnam Style" video that's had nearly a billion hits on YouTube (Yes, that's the most ever.). We also had many people doing parody videos of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe." They scored high in a CNN readers poll, but they picked something else as top song. Click here to see what it is.
Film Honors: Just in time for the holidays, the story of Ralphie's desperate desire for a Red Rider BB gun is going in the National Film Registry, Deadline reports. A Christmas Story was picked for the annual honor along with Breakfast at Tiffany's, Dirty Harry and 22 other films.
Disney Downloads: What's headed to Blu-ray in March? Who Framed Roger Rabbit the 25th anniversary edition along with Mulan and the Hunchback of Notre Dame collections, says Cinemablend.
Cute Animal Video: So you've got two Rottweilers vs. the Christmas tree. Who do you think won?
At year end, we are frequently treated to Top 10/best of (insert what year is ending) lists of movies, politicians, news stories, pictures. But none of those have quite the "cache" of the Mugshot of the Year. Buzzfeed is out with its own and there are some doozies. Although, I have to say the Tanning Mom didn't really impress me.
KTAR has its own Mugshots of the Day gallery (below) and you'll be sure to find something just as, if not more interesting, than the Buzzfeed collection:
Stephen Colbert has been featuring some fantastic musical acts to celebrate the holiday season on his show. And I found this one from one of my favorites, Diana Krall, particuarly fetching. But she's got her husband Elvis Costello and Stephen Colbert helping out on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas":
PFCS Awards: The Phoenix Film Critics Society 2012 Annual Awards have been announced and Argo was selected as Best Picture. Kathryn Bigelow was picked Best Director and Jessica Chastain was named Best Actress for Zero Dark Thirty. As I expected, Daniel Day-Lewis was named Best Actor for Lincoln. Read the full list of award winners.
Tour Queen: Who had the highest grossing tour of 2012? Madonna. According to the HuffPo her MDNA tour brought in a cool $228 million and some change. Bruce Springsteen was second with $199 million. That's followed by Roger Waters who took in $186 million and Coldplay earned $147 million.
Cute Animal Video: It's a puppy eating it's meal. But it's doing some pretty incredible yoga stretches and flips to do it. Let's just say it's taken downward dog to a whole new level.
Robert Downey, Jr. is just plain cool. He was invited by Cinefamily, a tiny Los Angeles theatre, to make an appearance on its telethon. The theater is trying to raise money to get a new projector and sound system. EW reports there was also a time capsule that was mysteriously left there for him. Well, he showed up and said he'd just write them a check to get them the new projecter and sound system. They immediately renamed it "Cinedowney". Now, that's how you play Santa!
The Scoop on Christmas Songs:Time magazine has posted a few factoids about your favorite Christmas songs. Now, I knew that "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was written as part of a marketing campaign. But did you know that "Jingle Bells" was actually written for a Thanksgiving celebration? Oh, and "The Christmas Song" -- was written during a heat wave.
Popped the Question: Kelly Clarkson is getting herself hitched. She's engaged to Brandon Blackstock. He's the stepson of singer/actress Reba McEntire. E!Online reports Clarkson tweeted a picture of the boulder he put on her finger. It's a yellow canary diamond. I don't know how he follows that up at Christmas.
I'm Outta Here! French actor Gerard Depardieu is giving up his French passport. Why? Because French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called him pathetic. Why did he call the Oscar-nominated actor pathetic? Because he decided to move to Belgium after the government "imposed a controversial 75 percent income tax" on those earning more an 1m euros, reports Deadline.
Some Classic Click Chick Links: There's the Chimpanzee Riding on a Segway and the catchy song that goes with it. And of course, you have to include Baby Monkey Riding on a Pig. If the Click Chick loved to talk about anything, it was bacon. I never met a bacon link I didn't like. What cracks me up the most is the number of times I received two specific bacon links. No. 1 is the image of the bacon roses. That's real bacon twisted to look like rosebuds and put on rose stems. No. 2 is the Bacon Explosion that was created by the BBQ Addicts. That's bacon stuffed with more sausage and even more bacon with a dollop of BBQ sauce then you smoke it or bake it. It comes in at a whopping two pounds. Since I've originally posted it, someone has adapted the recipe to include cheese. According to Wikipedia, it contains at least 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat.
After a nearly decade hiatus, film fans can go back to Middle Earth for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Now for those of you who haven't read the books, The Hobbit takes place 60 years before the Lord of the Rings. This is Bilbo's story. He's an reluctant hero headed off on adventure with 12 dwarves. The big question is this: is it as good as director Peter Jackson's LOTR movies? No. But it's still pretty darn good in my book. Extra credit points for the riveting scenes featuring Bilbo and Gollum. While the previous trilogy was heavy in gravitas, The Hobbit is your basic adventure packed with plenty of action and a healthy dose of humor. I say it's worth the price of a ticket. Much has been said about the HFR (high frame rate) of the film. Normally it would be 20, but in this instance it's 48. Some may find the realism off-putting, but I found it startlingly real. It earned an 7.8 out of 10 from the Phoenix Film Critics Society. As it stands now, it's on my Top 10 of the year...but the year isn't over yet. Who know, it could be bumped by Jean Valjean!
New Trailer Released:Zero Dark Thirty has been racking up critical success and has already won some major awards. So what better time for the studio to release a new trailer:
Downton Abbey Goes Street: Stephen Colbert was really upset that first lady Michelle Obama got an advance copy of Downton Abbey Season 3, while the rest of Americans have to wait until January to watch. So he got the cast of Downton Abbey to act out scenes from Breaking Bad. FYI, the language is not bleeped. You've been warned.
Golden Globes Promo: I love this Golden Globes promo with hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey:
Another Big Screen Musical: The Book of Mormon musical was a HUGE success on Broadway. It won a Tony. And now it seems it's likely headed to the big screen, says Variety. But we'll have to wait awhile to see it on the big screen.
What??? The Headline: 'Weird Al' Yankovic CAUGHT with dead hooker. Yes, there's a photo. You won't believe it.
There's a lot to like about the Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim if the trailer is any indication. It's like watching multi-billion dollar Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robots versus Godzilla on steroids. Throw in the uber-talented Idris Elba and mankind in peril and you've got an eagerly anticipated action movie coming out next July.
That not enough sci-fi/fantasy for you? Check out Tom Cruise in the first Oblivion trailer:
The Golden Globe Nominations:Lincoln leads with seven nominations, as it should in my mind. I like that Django Unchained scored two supporting actor nods for Leo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz. But the Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. didn't give a single nomination to Beasts of the Southern Wild. In my book, that's a HUGE snub. Dwight Henry gave one of the most powerful performances of the year in that film. And no nominations for Mad Men, Sherlock or Game of Thrones??? I hope you can sense my incredulity in that question marks. OK, off my soap box. I am glad that Argo and Downton Abbey scored nominations too. See the full list at The Hollywood Reporter.
Cute Animal Video: Elvis the bulldog puppy is giving his mommy a lecture. It's "adorbs!"
It's Fake! That's what the star of the A&E channel's "Storage Wars" is saying about the show. Dave Hester has filed suit against A&E claiming the hit show is a big old fake. According to the LA Times, Hester's complaint alleged that producers planted "exotic and expsensive items to pump up the drama on the show." No comment yet from A&E.
They say all good things must come to an end and I hope you think The Click Chick blog and on-air segments have been a good thing that have made you smile, chuckle and surf the web. But Friday, December 21 will be my last broadcast as The Click Chick. I'll still be around on Saturday's to host the morning show on KTAR. And Monday thru Friday, you can still catch me on RightThisMinute which you can see on ABC 15 weekdays. But now, instead of working 14 hours a day, I'll finally be getting much needed sleep! Thank you for all your clicks. This has been one of the best jobs anyone could ever have.
The New Will Smith Trailer: Will Smith and his son Jaden will appear in another film together. It's a post apocalyptic tale called After Earth:
: And did I mention there's a new movie about the son of Jor-El?
SAG Award Nominations: This is the only time some actors like to hear the word sag. The Screen Actors Guild nominations have been announced.
Cute Animal Video: It's a toddler walking the family dog on a leash. They pass by a puddle, but the toddler can't resist. He puts the leash down and starts playing in it. Does the dog run away? Nope. It just waits patiently for the little boy to get his play on. And then when the tot is done, he picks up the leash and they continue their walk. Major cuteness.
After a long wait by me and every other Trekkie on the planet, we get a look at the new "Star Trek Into the Darkness" trailer. The talented Benedict Cumberbatch looks like a deliciously malevolent bad guy. This trailer doesn't confirm he's Kahn, but he may be since he says he's out for revenge. Capt. Kirk, Scotty, Uhura and Spock all look ready for adventure. And they're wearing a lot of leather. Don't know what that means, but I think I want one of those jackets.
Cute Animal Video: It's the ugly animal video. You've heard of humans doing the perp walk. But how about a goat doing the perp walk. Well, that's what happened in Houston, Tex. where a goat got onto a school campus and scared the students. See for yourself.
Take A Moment for Brubeck:
I can't let the day go by without honoring legendary jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck. You've probably heard his song "Take Five" in a movies, commercials or jazz compilations. He would have been 92 today. He died of heart failure yesterday. He was one of the early acts that called out racists who said white artists shouldn't play at black clubs. His talent will be missed. See the Time magazine timeline on his life and work.
Christmas Video: Yes, they've both got loads of talent. Yes, they both can sing. But it's pretty obvious John Travolta and Olivia Newton John didn't bust the budget on this video from their Christmas album.
Bieber Snubbed: And Justin Bieber's manager is slamming the folks who pick the Grammy nominees. Scooter Braun says "You blew it." He perceives Beiber was snubbed. Bieber didn't earn a single nomination. An E!Online report quotes Braun as saying "The kid delivered. Huge successful album, sold out tour, and won people over...this time he deserved to be recognized."
Anchorman 2 News:Collider is reporting that Kristen Wiig may be joining the cast as Steve Carell's love interest. Now how funny would that be?
