'Illegal immigrant' now a racial slur?
Is "illegal immigrant" now a racial slur?
One columnist seems to think so.
According to CNN columnist Charles Garcia, the use of the term "illegal" implies someone has committed a crime in a country where someone is innocent until proven guilty.
Garcia went on to say that the term "illegal immigrant" was first used by the Nazis for Jewish people who were entering Palestine to flee German rule.
By becoming judge, jury and executioner, you dehumanize the individual and generate animosity toward them. New York Times editorial writer Lawrence Downes says "illegal" is often "a code word for racial and ethnic hatred."
What do you think? Is "illegal immigrant" now a racial slur?
